Best Ads Breakdown: Matrix vs. Neo

Best Ads Breakdown: Matrix vs. Neo

Hello!

It's The Ad Professor.

I’ve been in the lab all week and have a fresh batch of ads for you.

Do not share this with anyone who doesn’t like to think outside the box.

Here's a classic ad, a great social media ad, and a great TikTok ad.

🧪 Classic Ad: Rolex

Principle: Classical Conditioning

Associate the outcome the customer wants with your product.

"If you were doing X tomorrow, you'd wear a Rolex"

This is the most hypnotic ad copy I've ever found.

Why?

• It uses "you" twice

• Appeals to a future dream state "tomorrow"

• Associates success with Rolex

Another example:

🧪 Great Social Media Ad: Pear

Principle: Matrix vs. Neo

• The Matrix = Dating Apps

• Neo = Meet people in person via Pears ring.

Bonus Ad:

They are partnering with some of the biggest meme news pages to turn their product into advertorials. It looks like a news story -- but it's really an ad.

🧪 Great TikTok Ad: Apple Pay

Principle: Kill Excuses Via Extreme Examples

The Professor loves Apple Pay.

But here's a dirty secret: I have friends that don't use it because they think it's difficult to set up.

Apple Pay's team has leaned into this with this ad.

It's someone setting up Apple Pay in a Dune Buggy.

They've killed the excuse with the most extreme example.

Here's another gem from Apple Pay:

Watch both ads here.
